When I asked people to smile for the camera, they pulled this forced, fake and uncomfortable smile. Then throughout the film, I made each one of my subjects genuinely smile. With these screen shots I’m simply comparing the fake smile with the genuine smile.
when I asked people which smile they thought was a “nicer” smile, almost everyone said the smiles on the right (the genuine ones) apart from the people who featured in the pictures.
When I asked them which one they preferred, they preferred the fake ones. They didn’t like their features when they naturally smiled.
“I don’t’ like my double chin”
“why is my tongue sticking out…yuck”
“god I look like an idiot!”
“ugh I really don’t like my teeth”
what I’ve worked out from this exercise is that people are so concious about their image all the time. When they smile for the camera, they are not genuine and natural.
People prefer to have a picture taken of them without any imperfections, so they pull this face that makes them appear “visually appealing” to their audience, so that might involve them sucking in their double chin, covering their teeth, tilting their head down….everything unnatural.
