On our site visit I focused on recording textures, especially imperfections and "things that are not as good as they used to be." I found the cracks in walls and damaged paintwork the most interesting thing to record. I laid my paper over the imperfections, and then rubbed a graphite stick over the texture, so a rough texture would print onto the paper. These rubbings creating interesting mark makings and patterns. When I got back to the studio, I decided to focus on these shapes I had created. I traced over some of the shapes and then re-drew them bigger. Inside these shapes I used the textures from the start of the project and combined them. These could be the start of a garment or textile design?
