The design project was the first pathway we got to try out, before we decide our specialism. Honestly I really struggled with this project. I couldn't get my head round what design actually was until the end. I think its something like this; with design, you create/ invent something new but it has to have a purpose. i.e. you could design something that could be used on a garment, or for a building. Whereas with art, you can design/ create something with no purpose. It could be made just to view, or you could make it just for yourself. Art is more personal i think, because it doesn't have to have a purpose or a specific function. And then the last pathway is communication, which is all to with communicating a message, in anyway you like. I came into this foundation pretty certain that I wanted to do illustration, so I think the communication pathway may suit me best. But we'll see.
So with this design project, I struggled to make my project come to a clear conclusion because I got really confused about what direction of design I should go to. I didn't know whether to produce a piece of textiles, something for a garment, architecture..... anything! And what I produced for the final critique wasn't a finished piece, but it was the start of something that I could continue if I really wanted to.
What I learnt most from this project was that normally if I was to create something, a drawing or something 3D, I always imagine what it is going to look like in my head first, then create it from what I am imagining. However, this was limiting my work. I learnt that to design something new, you mustn't think of the end outcome. Just make it without thinking, and then you will produce something completely new and different... then you can work out what it is or what you would call it. This is what I wrote in my log book after my tutorial with my tutor Jen;
DON'T BE AFRAID TO EXPERIMENT
You don't need to know the outcome in your head before you create something. Just do it, see what happens because then you have no limits or boundaries.
