My Pet Letter

This was a short 2-day project that was a lot of fun. We had to choose a letter that we loved, make it, take it everywhere with us, look after it and document our day with our new "pet"

In my previous project when I “studied” the letter B, I had to try to sympathize with its character, and almost “put myself into his shoes” to gain a better understanding. I feel I really got to know B during this time, so I wanted to carry on using the letter B in this next project. He had also become my new favourite letter after getting to know him.

I wanted B to be some sort of alcoholic, depressed drunk, which all led back to his childhood. In his childhood he always came second best to his alphabet brother A, (which I found out in my previous project) and this bad upbringing affected his life so that now he has lots of confidence problems, and enjoys drinking his troubles away.

I made my pet letter out of wire, wrapped it up in plastic bags, and then covered it all up in blue plasticine. He was an uppercase B, I gave him quite a big ‘belly’ to look like some sort of beer belly, little hands so he could hold bottles and show his mood through his body language, he was blue because its quite an unhappy and sad colour (to show his depressed mood) and he was quite small, so that I could fit him in my bag and carry him around with me.

I wanted to show some sort of timeline of events through my photographs. It started off with me celebrating B’s birthday. I made him a cake, made banners, invited my flat mates to the “party”

Then I wanted to show B hitting the booze, and starting to get quite drunk. So we try to stop him from drinking any further.

At the end of the party he passes out in the corner, disgracing himself.

Then he does something stupid whilst he’s drunk that gets him into trouble, like getting into a fight, or drink driving.

And then it ends with B in therapy, needing help to sort his drinking problem and his confidence problems.
